Pregnant UPSC aspirant from Manipur dies from COVID-19 in New Delhi

NEW DELHI: Tuithung Wungreichon, a Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) aspirant hailing from Kashung village in Manipur's Ukhrul district, tragically succumbed to the dreaded COVID-19 yesterday at New Delhi's LNJP hospital. She was eight months pregnant with her child.

The 32-year-old, who was residing in the Mohhamad Puri area in New Delhi, initially presented with cough and fever at the hospital on April 21 and tested positive for the pathogen.

Her condition continued to deteriorate over the next few days, and at the time of death, she was suffering from anaemia and sepsis. She eventually passed away of a massive cardiac arrest.

After her demise, the bereaved family was unable to find a resting place for her and reached out to special commissioner of police Robin Hibu seeking help in this regard.

Talking to InsideNE, Hibu said: "It is extremely tragic what we are seeing around us. This is the first time we are feeling so very helpless. Hospital beds and ICUs are becoming increasingly difficult to get. So much so that even affluent people with political clout are finding it hard to make arrangements. The situation is especially grim for people from the Northeast doing low-paid jobs. Now, we have been able to find burial grounds in Mongolpuri and Burari for Christians from the northeast."

Wungreichon was finally given a proper Christian burial in Mongolpuri yesterday afternoon. The grieving family has thanked Hibu for his timely intervention.

"Today, at this hour of grief, my family and I take this time to thank you Sir Robin Hibu for your invaluable help and support. At a young age of 32, carrying an unborn child of 8 months, it has been an unimaginable heartbreak and an irreplaceable gaping hole for the families to lose Tuithung Wungreichon. She always smiled the widest and laughed the hardest, and that is how each of us will always remember her," Chuan, the deceased's sister, stated in a message grieving the lost one.

Delhi reported 22,933 new confirmed cases of Covid-19 on Sunday taking the national capital's tally of active cases to 94,592 while the infection rate is 30.21 per cent as per the latest figures.
