Pregnant woman dies after clashing with police in Karbi Anglong

Diphu, March 8, 2019:

The Karbi Anglong authorities carried out an eviction drive near the Lankaijan Forest Reserve along the Hojai-Karbi Anglong area. The KAAC administration, led by CEM Tuliram Ronghang sought to evict alleged “illegal Bangladeshi encroachers” who had constructed many houses in the area after allegedly taking permission from the village headman.

On March 4, a pregnant woman fell pray after protestors of the eviction drive started clashing with authorities, which led to many people being injured. After struggling with her injuries for a week, Kulsuma Begum has finally succumbed to her injuries, which has caused an uproar in the region.

After receiving the dead body, more than 500 locals have gheraoed the Nokhuti Police Station and demanded compensation to the tune of Rs. 10 lakh for the deceased woman after the callous approach of the Karbi Anglong authorities towards curbing the protests. Moreover, they have demanded that the authorities look after the newborn.
