Prince Philip, Queen Elizabeth II's husband, passes away at 99

LONDON: Prince Philip, husband of Britain's Queen Elizabeth II, also the longest-serving royal consort in British history today morning passed away at the Windsor Castle.

The death of the 99-year-old has been confirmed by the royal family.

“It is with deep sorrow that Her Majesty The Queen has announced the death of her beloved husband, His Royal Highness The Prince Philip, Duke of Edinburgh. His Royal Highness passed away peacefully this morning at Windsor Castle,” the royal family wrote in a statement.

In 1947, Philip married the then-Princess Elizabeth. They have four daughters, eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Philip, also known as the Duke of Edinburgh, retired in 2017 and has made few public appearances since then. He had been isolating with the queen at the Windsor Castle, west of London, prior to his hospitalisation.

Prince Philip was born in Greece in 1921. He was the nephew of the then-Greek King Constantine I, although he has no Greek blood.

He is of German, Danish and Russian descent.

In 1939, he entered the British navy and had a promising career and a "good fight," but he left in 1951 to accompany his wife on her duties.

Until 1947, when he became a British subject and dropped his titles to become Philip Mountbatten, he was known as Prince Philip of Greece.

Prince Philip was a conservationist pioneer and the founder of the Worldwide Wildlife Fund.

He also launched the Duke of Edinburgh Awards in 1956.
