Lucknow, July 19, 2019:

Priyanka Gandhi Varda has allegedly been arrested during a protest against the Uttar Pradesh Government.

Priyanka's arrest has been condemned by her brother and former Congress Chief Rahul Gandhi. Taking to Twitter, the Gandhi scion wrote: "The illegal arrest of Priyanka in Sonbhadra, UP, is disturbing. This arbitrary application of power, to prevent her from meeting families of the 10 Adivasi farmers brutally gunned down for refusing to vacate their own land, reveals the BJP Govt’s increasing insecurity in UP."

The incident happened on Friday after Priyanka Gandhi Vadra was taken into preventive custody as the police moved her from the protest site. However, Gandhi claims she has been arrested.

The local administration, however, agrees to disagree. "Priyanka Gandhi has not been detained. She has been stopped by the local administration", officials said.

The alleged arrest happened after Gandhi joined a protest against the Uttar Pradesh government on Friday after she was stopped from visiting Sonbhadra, where Section 144 has been imposed, to meet the families of the 10 people killed in firing over a land dispute.

It may be mentioned that at least 10 people were killed on Wednesday in a shootout over a piece of piece of disputed land in Sonbhadra district of UP.

Apart from the 10 killed, 18 others were injured when they resisted an attempt by village pradhan Yagya Dutt and his supporters to take possession of the 90 bighas of disputed land in the district’s Ghorawal area.

A total of 26 people have been arrested in relation to the case.
