NEW DELHI: India’s LGBTQ community has received an endorsement of a prominent national politician as Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has extended his support towards the queer community in a recent Instagram post on pride month.
Rahul Gandhi took to his Instagram account and posted, “Peaceful individual choices must be respected. Love is love. #PrideMonth.”
Few Indian politicians have openly extended their support towards the queer community from time to time. This is the first time that a top national level leader posted openly to mark their support.
Gandhi’s comment section was filled with gratitude and appreciation moments after posting it.
The LGBTQIA+ community celebrates every month of June of the year as pride month to celebrate their existence and fight towards equality.
This month, the queer community and their allies organise parades and events to spread awareness about the LGBTQIA+ community.
India has abolished section 377, an act that criminalise homosexuality, in September 2018 in a landmark judgment by the then Chief Justice of India Dipak Mishra, yet the country is still under the stigma around it.
After the abolition of the act many politicians, including from the ruling government, came out against the judgment given by Supreme Court
Under such circumstances, Gandhi’s support has come as a welcome move among the community members.
