NEW DELHI: Congress veteran Rahul Gandhi today wrote to former Assam chief minister Bhumuidhar Barman's son to convey his heartfelt condolences on his father's demise.

"I am deeply saddened by the demise of your father, Shri Bhumidhar Barman Ji. We have lost a veteran Congress leader who left an indelible mark on politics in Assam," the former Congress leader wrote in his letter to Diganta Barman.

Gandhi further added that Barman's illustrious political journey bears testament to his resilience and unwavering commitment to building a better future for all.

"He will be remembered for his relentless pursuit of peace, even in the face of grave violence. But most importantly, his generosity and warmth will be missed by all those whose lives he touched. I cannot imagine your anguish and sorrow at losing him," he said, adding, "Please accept my heartfelt condolences. My thoughts and prayers are with you and your family at this difficult time."

Former Assam chief minister Bhumidhar Barman died on Sunday evening at a private hospital in Guwahati after a prolonged illness at 91.

Barman, a veteran Congress leader, was a two-time chief minister of the state. His first term as the chief minister lasted from April 22 to May 14, 1996, when his predecessor Hiteswar Saikia died.

He was again made the chief minister in 2010 when then CM Tarun Gogoi had gone to Mumbai for his heart surgery.

Barman held important portfolios in both the Hiteswar Saikia and Tarun Gogoi governments.

Barman's son Diganta is contesting the 2021 Assam election from the Barkhetry Constituency in Nalbari district.
