Gogoi has been imprisoned since he was arrested from Jorhat on December 12, 2019, the second day of the anti-Citizenship Amendment Act agitation in the state. Repeated bail pleas have been rejected by Gauhati High Court; the latest being on Thursday that drew widespread resentment from across the state and triggered severe criticism of the state government from various quarters.

Senior cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma yesterday tried to wash its hands off saying that it was a case of National Investigation Agency chargesheet wherein Gogoi is being tried for alleged links with Maoists.

Trade union leader Charan Deka, peasant leader Kamal Kumar Medhi, rights activist Sumitra Hazarika have been named the party’s vice presidents along with Dilip Bora, Mohini Mohan Ligira, Russel Hussain, Dipak Saikia, Ranjit Tamuly, Dr Harikanta Das, Bedanta Laskar, Hareshwar Barman, Phani Tayeng, Anil Boro, Bhaben Barua, Tankeswar Moran, Sidhartha Baruah and Pulin Bhattacharya.

Mahendra Dihingiya, Giri Shankar Goswami, Lohit Gogoi, Hussain Md Shahjahan, Ankur Saikia, Alok Nath, Dibas Phukon, Jahiruddin Laskar and Rubul Das have been designated general secretaries.

Academician Dr Hiren Gohain has been named the chief adviser, while Dr Udayaditya Bharali, Dr Indrani Dutta, Dr Sanjay Tanti, Dr Hafiz Rashid Choudhury and Dr Ghanashyam Nath have been nominated as advisers.
The last day of the convention was marked by the arrival of Gogoi’s 82-year-old mother Priyada Gogoi to a rousing welcome by party workers.
