GUWAHATI: In a major reshuffle, Ramandeep Kaur (IPS officer of 2013 batch) has been transferred and posted as the new Superintendent of Police in Cachar district, which witnessed violence on its border with Mizoram on July 26.

Kaur was formerly posted as the Superintendent of Police in the Hailakandi district.

It needs mention here that the outgoing Cachar SP Nimbalkar Vaibhav Chandrakant was injured in the violence and is recuperating in a hospital in Mumbai.

The border dispute between Assam and Mizoram saw the two chief ministers -- Himanta Biswa Sarma and Zoramthanga -- engaging in a public spat, blaming each other’s police for the violence and seeking the Centre’s intervention.

Union home minister Amit Shah spoke to the chief ministers of Assam and Mizoram, Himanta Biswa Sarma and Zoramthanga respectively, and urged them to ensure peace along the disputed border and find an amicable settlement.

Assam’s Barak Valley districts of Cachar, Karimganj, and Hailakandi share a 164 km long border with Mizoram’s three districts of Aizawl, Kolasib and Mamit.

Following a territorial dispute, there were clashes along the inter-state border in August 2020 and February this year.

After taking charge, Ramandeep Kaur said that the "situation is tense and talks are being held at the senior level."

"CRPF as a neutral force is deployed at the border. Assam and Mizoram forces are respectively at their positions. Only the residents of the area are allowed to move," Ramandeep Kaur told a news agency.
