Nimati Ghat tragedy update: 2 missing persons remain untraced as ops continue

JORHAT: The rescue operations at Nimati Ghat were expanded downstream of the Brahmaputra river as the hunt for the missing persons continued, officials said.

While one person has been killed, two remain untraced.

According to reports, deep divers have also been deployed, but to no avail. The National Disaster Response Force engaged 110 rescuers who searched approximately 45 km downstream and surrounding area of the incident site on Friday, the sources said.

Personnel also reportedly searched the area with magnets to trace bikes which had fallen into the river.

It needs mention here that the state government Cabinet has decided to entrust Finance Minister Ajanta Neog with the responsibility to constantly monitor the construction of the Jorhat-Majuli bridge. In case of any gaps, the state government will provide the required additional support.

'The cabinet had also entrusted additional chief secretary Maninder Singh to conduct an inquiry into the incident and directed the Jorhat Police to register a criminal case against those responsible for the accident.
