Guwahati, August 9, 2019:

Assam's National Award-winning filmmaker Rima Das has every reason to smile as she continues to bring accolades to the Northeastern state. Her latest offering, ‘Bulbul Can Sing’, was selected as the opening night film at the Indian Film Festival of Melbourne, and Rima's film about adolescence did not return empty-handed, as it bagged the 'Best Indie Film' award at the prestigious festival.

Rima took to Facebook to express her gratitude, and wrote: "“What a wonderful night this has been! Thank you to the jury of Indian Film Festival of Melbourne for awarding Bulbul Can Sing the Best Indie Film. Special thanks to the audience for all your love. Kudos to the Festival Director Mitu Bhowmick and the whole team for putting together this unique festival. This award is particularly special because it’s where mainstream films, regional films and independent films from India have come together under one roof. Can’t wait for the opening night tomorrow!"

'Gully Boy' won the 'Best Film' award at the festival, Tabu won 'Best Actress', while Vijay Setupathi won the 'Best Actor' award.

It is to be mentioned that the festival’s chief guest, Shah Rukh Khan (who was also awarded the 'Excellence in Cinema' award), presented the movie to the Australian audiences in Melbourne. Shah Rukh also enthralled the audience with some of his trademark dance moves.

The Indian Film Festival of Melbourne will go on from August 8 to 15 in Melbourne, Australia. The festival will screen over 60 films from all across India and the subcontinent in over 22 languages.
