GUWAHATI: Moments after an Assam Congress delegation was barred from visiting the Assam-Mizoram border by the ruling government, Ripun Bora, the party's former president has written to Amit Shah demanding an all-party meet to discuss the burning issue.

"I would like to state that the border disputes of Assam-Mizoram have arrived at a volatile stage," Ripun Bora wrote in his letter to Shah.

Stating that "both the forces of Assam and Mizoram are still in "retaliating mood" in the border, Bora warned that further mob violence seems likely due to the tense situation prevailing in the two states.

"If the tension is not removed immediately with a positive political response to the matters related to the border disputes, the situation in both the States may go from bad to worst with its adverse impact in the other NE States. Therefore, I urge upon you to urgently call a meeting of both the Chief Ministers of the two States and all the Political parties of NE States including National, Regional and Local political parties with other stakeholders in presence of the Prime Minister so that a permanent solution can be availed," Ripun Bora added.

Although the Congress team requested the district administration to allow them to visit till Lailapur police station, they were not permitted.

We urge both the Assam and Mizoram governments to bring a peaceful environment along the bordering areas," Debabrata Saikia said.

Meanwhile, newly appointed Cachar district Superintendent of Police (SP) Ramandeep Kaur said the situation along the inter-state border remains tense. She said three companies of CRPF had been deployed in the area.

Meanwhile, senior Assam and Mizoram officials - chief secretaries and DGPs (Director General of Police) - reached Delhi for a meeting with the Union Home Ministry over the Assam-Mizoram border issue. The meeting was scheduled for 4 PM in the afternoon today.
