GUWAHATI: Assam Pradesh Congress Committee (APCC) president Ripun Bora on Wednesday took a dig at the state government’s inability to contain price rise in the state.

Greeting the people of Assam on the occasion of Bhogali Bihu, Bora said this time it would be Bihu celebrations only for the wealthy ones. “Many would not be able to manage the feast this evening due to skyrocketing prices of essentials. The government has failed badly in controlling price rise,” he remarked.

A large section of the society is already financially constrained due to job loss owing to Covid-19 pandemic outbreak.

He also said for some others, like the employees of 108 Mrityunjoy Service, it would not be possible to manage the Uruka feast because they have not been paid their salaries so far.

Bora further observed that the family of peasant leader Akhil Gogoi would not been able to celebrate Bihu in their household for a second time as the leader has been jail for over a year.

The Rajya Sabha member also said the people of Laika Dodhia villages of Dibru Saikhowa National Park, who have been protesting in Tinsukia demanding their rehabilitation at a different location, would not celebrate the harvest festival because the state government was yet to take a call on their issue. Two women, including a pregnant one, died at the protest site.

Criticising Assam Assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami for the recent notification withdrawing the leader of the opposition status from Debabrata Saikia, Bora said: “I am happy that the Gauhati High Court yesterday stayed the implementation of the notification. Goswami has been occupying the chair only as a rubber stamp.”

Bora also took a jibe at senior cabinet minister Himanta Biswa Sarma calling him an undeclared chief minister of Assam. “He should not take interest in what is happening in the Congress. He should focus on how to gain the position of chief minister,” he said.
