Rishi Kapoor, Veteran Bollywood Actor, Passes away at 67

Mumbai, April 30, 2020:

A day after the loss of thespian Irrfan Khan, the nation woke up to another blow. Rishi Kapoor, the actor who rose to prominence in the 1970's with Bobby, passed away at a Mumbai hospital around 5:30 am in the morning today. He was 67.

Bollywood legend confirmed the news of his passing earlier today. "The news was confirmed by megastar Amitabh Bachchan on Twitter. He wrote, "Rishi Kapoor... gone... passed away. I am destroyed !", he wrote.

Apart from the film world, sporting personalities also conveyed their condolences at Kapoor's demise. Virat Kohli, captain of the Indian cricket team, wrote, "This is unreal and unbelievable. Yesterday Irrfan Khan and today Rishi Kapoor ji. It's hard to accept this as a legend passes away today. My condolences to the family and may his soul rest in peace."

Kapoor's death was also condoled by Congress party scion Rahul Gandhi, who took to Twitter to post the following words, "This is a terrible week for Indian cinema, with the passing of another legend, actor Rishi Kapoor. A wonderful actor, with a huge fan following across generations, he will be greatly missed. My condolences to his family, friends & fans all over the world, at this time of grief."

Notably, Kapoor received the National Film Award for his debut role as a child artist in his father Raj Kapoor's 1970 film 'Mera Naam Joker.' The actor, whose is survived by wife Neetu and children Riddhima and Ranbir, had not posted anything on Twitter since April 2.

It may be recalled that the actor was hospitalised on Wednesday morning after he complained that he was not "feeling well". According to reports, he was admitted to Sir HN Reliance Foundation Hospital in Mumbai. The hospitalisation was confirmed by Kapoor's elder brother, actor Randhir Kapoor, to a media house.

It is pertinent to mention here that Rishi Kapoor was diagnosed with cancer in 2018 and went to New York City for treatment. After a successful treatment for over a year, Rishi Kapoor returned to India on 26 September 2019.
