Rituparna Pegu lynching: Adi Mising body demands death penalty to slayers

While strongly condemning the brutal killing of one Rituparna Pegu of Dhemaji district, Assam at Guwahati on June 12^th, 2020, the Adi Mising Baane Kebang (AMBK), a common organization of Adis and Misings of Arunachal and Assam, demanded the Assam Government to give stringent punishment to the killers of Pegu while giving adequate compensation to late Pegu’s wife and child.

In a grieving message, AMBK General Secretary, Okom Yosung said that the killing of Rituparna Pegu in the broad daylight in a shop at the line and style of Islamic organizations like Taliban and ISIS by slitting the throat is very disturbing and barbaric. “Those five killers of late Pegu be given stringent punishment not less than the death penalty (hang till death). And for speedy justice the case should be handed over to a fast track court under the supervision of a senior High Court judge”, added Okom Yosung who also holds the post of General Secretary of Adi Baane Kebang, the apex and appellate body of Adi tribe/society of Arunachal Pradesh.

The AMBK has also seconded the demand of Takam Mising Porin Kebang (TMPK), the All Mising Students’ Union of Assam wherein compensation of not less than a sum of Rs. 15,00,000/- with a government job to widow of late Pegu be given. While talking to this scribe, Okom Yosung also said that the Adis and Misings of both Adi and Mising tribes/societies settled along the mountain and valleys of middle and eastern Arunachal and plains of Assam will always stand together to fight against any injustice meted out to Adis and Misings.

Rituparna Pegu lynching incident

Rituparna Pegu, a 26-year-old was killed in broad daylight in the vicinity of Noonmati, Guwahati, Assam. Following this, there has been an uproar on social media over graphic pictures of the murder. The scene of a desperate wife, with a 7-month-old baby going about the area to enquire about her husband in a desperate “emotional” state has enraged the civil society.

The incident took place at a store called Armand Home Furnishing, situated in Noonmati.

Taking stock of the matter, the Noonmati PS has arrested 5 persons, name Hussain Ali, Dulal Ali, Ibrahim Ali, Manuwara Khatun and Arman Ali charged with murder. A case vide Noonmati PS C/no. 294/20 u/s 147/148/149/302 IPC registered and the investigation is on.

The IPC 147, 148, 149 which includes the word riot has confused the people and as such, they have alleged a bigger motive behind the killing. Due to the sensitivity of the issue, Inside Northeast spoke to Police Commissioner Munna Gupta. He said, “the aforementioned IPC along with murder has been charged due to unlawful assembly which is a nature of these cases”. On the concerns of a bigger agenda, he said, “as per investigation it’s a spontaneous case over an individual argument”.
