New Delhi, December 8, 2019:

Myanmar’s civilian leader Aung San Suu Kyi will travel to The Hague this week to fight the accusations of genocide against her regime over the Rohingya Muslim minority.

Kyi will be personally representing Myanmar at the International Court of Justice in the Netherlands to “defend the national interest” over the charges of ethnic cleansing of the Rohingyas from the Buddhist state.

It may be mentioned here that the ethnic cleansing of the Rohingya Muslims is one of the most-high profile international legal cases. Around 7,40,000 Rohingyas were forced to flee to the neighboring Bangladesh and India following the ethnic cleansing. They now live in refugee camps in these two countries.

A lawsuit, charging genocide, including charges of mass murder and rape, was lodged by a West African state, Gambia. It is backed by the 57-nation Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC).

According to reports, the case will be fought by a Gambian team led by Abubacarr Tambadou, who has earlier dealt with cases from Rwanda’s 1994 genocide.

The case, in which, Gambia has alleged that Myanmar breached the 1948 UN Genocide Convention, is scheduled to take place on Tuesday in the International Court of Justice.
