HOJAI: After Lachit Borphukan fought the British rulers out of India, 15th century saint reformer Srimanta Sankardeva had cautioned the Congress that Assam stood a chance of foreign influx.

The assembly election-bound Assam has been rediscovering itself through BJP leaders such as Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath.

Addressing an election rally at Lanka, the saffron clad BJP leader said: “The Congress’s patronisation of infiltration had led to national security issues in several provinces,” he said.

“It’s a matter of pride that this land is also that of Sankardeva. I salute Sankardeva, one of India’s prominent cultural nationalists. It’s because of Sankardeva that this land is safe. Else had the Congress’s policies been prevalent, this land would also have been another province like those which have created  security concerns about India’s integrity.

“I salute that great soul who adopted nationalism to secure this land ... Sankardeva had cautioned against infiltration and so the Congress never propagated his ideology because Congress’s policy has no place for progress and prosperity or your happiness. Its only policy is to grab power,” Adityanath said.

He also said the Congress’s patronisation of influx led to Assam paying a heavy price for a long time in the form of insurgency and secessionism.
