Section 144 imposed in Assam’s Silchar Over Road Mishap

Silchar, November 1, 2019:

The district administration of Silchar has imposed prohibitory orders under Section 144 after a massive protest hit the streets over a recent road mishap.

A speeding truck ran over two women on October 31. As many as 23 people were injured in the accident.

The Cachar Deputy Commissioner, Laya Madduri issued a notification regarding the restrictions across the district. “This is to contain rumour, breach of law and public tranquility, safety of people and prevent possible clash and violence between groups," it said.

On Wednesday, a speeding truck ran over two women, who participated in the Kali Puja immersion procession in Meherpur area of Silchar. The truck also ran into vehicles on its way, following which, a group of enraged locals torched the truck and put up a blockade on the busy road, connecting to the Silchar Medical College Hospital.

Taking advantage of this, a few miscreants ransacked an ASTC bus and a luxury car at the Hospital Road locality of the town and pelted stones.

The two women, identified as Pompa Dey (20) and Sonali Das (18), both residents of Durgapally, had died in the hospital.

Police arrested the driver and the assistant driver of the truck. Also, two policemen have been suspended for their negligence in duty.
