MIZORAM: The Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on Tuesday that a bypoll for the Serchhip assembly seat would be held on April 17 alongside two parliamentary constituencies and 13 assembly seats across the country.

 

The deadline for withdrawal is set for April 3, the deadline for scrutiny of nomination papers is set for March 31, according to the sources.

The bypolls for two parliamentary constituencies and 14 assembly seats will be counted simultaneously on May 2.

 

Serchhip constituency has 19,296 electorates, including 10,194 female voters, according to the most recent electoral rolls released on January 20.

 

Serchhip assembly constituency has 29 polling stations.

 

Mizoram BJP tweeted,"As the state is preparing for the upcoming Serchhip constituency's MLA bye-election.The booth incharge for each and every booths in Serchhip Constituency had been announced.Continuously,the party's duties and obligations for bye-election had also been discussed during the meeting".

 

The incumbent MLA Lalduhoma, who won on an independent ticket in the last assembly elections in November 2018, was disqualified, forcing a bypoll for the Serchhip seat.

 

The anti-defection law disqualified Lalduhoma as a lawmaker in November of last year.

 

The ruling Mizo National Front (MNF), the main opposition Zoram People's Movement (ZPM), and the Congress have all declared their candidates for the upcoming by-election.

 

Vanlalzawma, the MNF's vice president and former Lok Sabha member and ex-MLA, has been elected, while Lalduhoma, the ZPM's chief, will run for re-election.

 

P.C. Laltlansanga, the party's chief, has been nominated by Congress.

 

Both the BJP and the People's Conference (PC) are yet to make their official candidate announcements.

 

According to party sources, the BJP will field former state BJP spokesperson Lalhriatrenga Chhangte, while the PC will field Vanlalruata, the party's vice president.
