Sikkim-Bengal landslide leaves 1 dead, & several injured; 5 go missing

GANGTOK: Landslides in Sikkim and West Bengal have killed one and injured while five persons are yet to be traced down after a labour camp in West Bengal's Mamkhola was washed away early this morning by a rivulet which has swollen up due to heavy rainfall. Traffic has also been diverted from this point.

As many as eight labourers were working for ITDCL Railway construction company and were engaged in the construction of the Sevoke-Rangpo rail project.

The locals have three persons who were admitted to Sikkim and Kalimpong hospitals. However, one of them, 35-year-old Dhan Singh Bhandari from Nepal was declared dead upon arrival at the Kalimpong hospital.

Two others have been admitted to a Sikkim hospital.

Search and rescue operations for the five missing persons is on and involves local police and rafting team.

A disaster management team is also on the way from Dabgram while a sniffer dog is also being sent from Siliguri to assist the search.
