Sikkim Closes World’s Tallest Chenrezig Statue Site amid Coronavirus Fear

The world's tallest Chenrezig statue site in Sikkim will remain closed for visitors to prevent the outbreak of the dreaded Coronavirus (COVID-19).

Visitors at the 137-feet Chenrezig statue have been prohibited from entering the complex following rising positive cases of Coronavirus in India.

In a notification issued by the Culture department of Sikkim, the Administration of the Chenrezig Singkham Riwo Potala stated, " This is hereby informed to all concerned that due to spread of Coronavirus, the Chenrezig Singkham Riwo Potala/ Sky walk, Sang-Ngag Choling shall remain closed w.e.f 09/03/2020 afternoon till 31st March, 2020.”

The Chenrezig is a new Buddhist pilgrimage site at Pelling in West Sikkim, built mainly to attract tourists from across the globe.

It may be mentioned here that over 4000 people have died due to the virus. Globally it has been reported that the virus has spread to more than 100 countries. In India, positive cases have rose to 46, the youngest victim being a three-year-old.
