Sikkim: De-notification of forest order regarding Dzongri-Goechala Trek

Lukendra Rasaily, Sikkim Tourism Development Corporation (STDC) Chairman met Forest Secretary Y. P.

Gurung on Tuesday to discuss re-opening of tourist destinations which falls under the Forest Department.

The STDC Chairman, Lukendra Rasaily was accompanied by Ramesh Basnett from Travel Agents Association of Sikkim,

Ganesh Shivakoty and Lallhang Subba from Sikkim United Tourism organisation and Secretary Sikkim Krantikari Morcha tourism wing.

They discussed in detail about the need for de-notification of the Forest Department Order issued in

April for the closure of Dzongri-Goechala trekking trail inside the Kanchendzonga National Park due to the pandemic.

Khangchendzonga biosphere reserve could not take off from the Uttarey entry point, the Yuksom

entry point and the Nambu Entry point for trekking in west Sikkim and the Dzongu entry point in north Sikkim.”

The Forest Secretary, Gurung assured that the order would be lifted soon.

He requested the Secretary to expedite the process of opening of separate permit issuing office at Uttarey for the convenience of local tour operators and ease of tourists.

This demand had been earlier placed by area in-charge of Manebong-Dentam constituency Purna Hang Subba and further stressed at the meeting by Lallhang Subba.

The team also discussed extensively on trekking and ecotourism.

Sikkim had the only Directorate for Ecotourism in the country, pointed out STDC Chairman Lukendra Rasaily.

The STDC Chairman also met Chief Conservator of Forests Udai Gurung who is also, the Director of Ecotourism Cell.

"We will be having further coordination meeting on this subject followed by meeting with stake holders of Sikkim," informed STDC Chairman Lukendra Rasaily.
