Sikkim: Extreme Cold Impacts Construction of World’s Highest Skywalk ‘Bhaley Dhunga’

Gangtok, January 11, 2020:

Extreme cold weather has delayed the construction work of the proposed tourist project, Bhaley Dhunga in South Sikkim, which once completed, will be the world’s highest skywalk.

The work of the proposed passenger ropeway at Bhaley Dhunga cliff has been delayed due to severe cold and power and water supply disruptions, reports said.

According to the Site In-charge, Rajiv Kumar, construction work could not be started as scheduled due to over eight-month delay in getting forest clearance and got further delayed due to extreme weather and rain for at least nine months and the remaining three months being extremely cold.

The Bhaley Dhunga project has currently employed around 150 workers per day of which, at least 80 percent are said to be local workers. It may be mentioned here that with temperature dropping to four degrees, the workers find it difficult to continue with the construction. Lack of power supply has further compelled them to rely on generator.

“If the work progresses at this pace and without any hurdles, the ropeway will be completed by October,” informed Kumar. He also said that the vertical length of the Bhaley Dhunga passenger ropeway would be 1,358 m. The first station is located at 1810 m altitude while the top station is being constructed atop Bhaley dhunga at 3,158 m.

The skywalk is expected to help in the economic and livelihood development of the region, creating new business opportunities and services, mostly in the tourism and hospitality sectors.
