The Sikkim government has been working on a war footing to bring back the people of the state stranded in different parts of the country as soon as possible amid the coronavirus pandemic.

The state has received as many as 6922 applications from those stranded in different parts of the country amid this nationwide lockdown due to spread of COVID-19 and willing to come back to home.

Rinzing Bhutia, State Coordinator for COVID-19, informed that as many as 1122 people have already arrived from neighbouring Darjeeling, Kalimpong, Jalpaiguri and Rajasthan.  “The process to bring back the Sikkimese people will continue,” he added.

Besides, he said that anyone who wish to return to Sikkim must register online. “Everyone has to apply through registration portal or helpline. Thereafter, they will be allowed to enter Sikkim,” he added.

“The registered people will be picked from Siliguri via Sikkim Nationalised Transportation buses and no one will be allowed to take private vehicles. Screening will be conducted at the Rangpo or Melli Checkpost,” he said.

Talking about the arrangements of quarantine facilities, the state coordinator said, “All together five thousand quarantine facilities including paid quarantine facilities have been arranged so far.”
