Sikkim Man Booked for Allegedly Beating Dog "Almost to Death"

Gangtok, February 20, 2020:

Ranjit Tamang, a resident of Lower Majhitar in East Sikkim was on Wednesday booked for allegedly beating a stray dog "almost to death".

Earlier, Anu Thami, the Vice President of Animals & Us (Gangtok), an NGO, had filed an FIR against the accused for his violence against "man's best friend' at the Rangpo Police station in East Sikkim.

Referring to Tamang's cruel act in her FIR, Thami wrote, "It is against the prevention of cruelty to Animal Act, 1960, Section 11(a) to beat any animal pet or stray to death. Several of his neighbours have also complained about his cruelty to dogs and owners." Thami also added that she had recorded videos and sound clips of their claims and conversations.

Later, ASI Bhawani Shankar Ruchal took cognizance of the complaint and an investigation was launched into the matter. Tamang was later arrested and kept in police custody for one night for his alleged act of violence against the dog.
