Gangtok, August 23, 2019:

The Sikkim Progressive Youth Forum (SPYF) has filed First Information Report (FIR) demanding justice for a 10-year-old girl in a physical assault case.

SPYF has demanded strict punishment of the accused Range Officer Tenzing Wangyal Lepcha.

A 10-year-old girl was physically assaulted in East Sikkim’s Chandmari area. According to reports, the accused had hired the child for domestic help in the pretext of helping her in studies.

SPYF has demanded that this modern-day slavery of innocent children be stopped. It has registered the case in Sikkim’s Sadar Police Station.

The victim, who is also a school student, has been taken to the hospital for medical tests. It is to be mentioned that the said case took place on August 16 but no proper steps were taken against the accused.

Often reports of children being hired for domestic aid in the pretext of supporting their education comes into limelight. The children are kept as servants. In a state where children’s education should receive the utmost importance, they are being exploited by the educated.

According to the 2011 census, a total of 10.1 million children in India serve as child laborers. They are deprived of their childhood as well as education.
