Sikkim reports 8 more COVID-19 deaths and 241 new cases today

GANGTOK: The death toll of COVID-19 in Sikkim has risen up to 177, with eight more people infected dying today.

The state reported as many as 241 fresh cases of the novel Coronavirus during the day, pushing the total number of cases in Sikkim to 10165.

Of the total new cases, East Sikkim alone reported 189 positive cases of the infection following West Sikkim (12), and South Sikkim (35), while no positive cases have been reported from North Sikkim.

Sikkim currently has 2739 active cases of COVID-19, while 7042 people infected with the virus have so far been recovered during the day taking the tally of recoveries till date to 7042.

Moreover, to review the COVID-19 situation in the State a meeting was held at the conference hall of Tashiling Secretariat this morning under the chairmanship of chief secretary, Shri S.C. Gupta.

During the meeting, the chief secretary was briefed about the availability and supply of oxygen and vaccines by the officials from the health department.

He also apprised about the low turnout of elderly people for the vaccination in rural areas and a significant number of vaccine hesitancy groups in the State that has caused a delay in the completion of the first dose of the targeted groups.

The meeting also discussed the status of testing and tracking to curb the pandemic in the State.

Shri S.C. Gupta directed the health department to take all necessary measures to ramp up the vaccination drive with the active participation of public representatives at the grassroots.

He also urged them to increase the number of hospital beds and COVID ICUs available for COVID patients, as well as to closely track the supply of oxygen in the state for emergency preparedness.

Gupta also inspected the Rangpo and Melli check Posts, where officials from the home department told him that the entry rate at Melli check post was lower than at Rangpo check post.

Moreover, he instructed the concerned departments to work closely together to develop an effective and strategic emergency preparedness roadmap.
