GANGTOK: Sikkim recorded 200 new cases of COVID-19 in a single day, even though the State is being under partial lockdown. The daily caseload has now exceeded 200 for the fifth time in a row.

In Sikkim, the spread of the infection has increased in the last week, with 1,440 new cases recorded from May 1 to Friday.

With this, the state's cumulative number of COVID-19 cases has risen to 9,651.

Among them, 6,753 people infected with the virus have so far been recovered and 190 are currently undergoing treatment at hospitals.

The State also recorded five new fatalities due to the virus in the past 24 hours. With the new deaths, the death toll of the state now stands at 165.

Meanwhile, 65 COVID positive patients recovered and were discharged yesterday.

The rising trend which has continued about two weeks has brought the active COVID-19 caseload to 2,528.

The Covid-19 pandemic revived in the state in the second week of April, after which the number of daily cases has been steadily increasing. The State has reported over 2,812 cases since April 10.

The weekly death toll from COVID-19 has risen significantly in the last seven days, with 17 people dying due to coronavirus infection complications.

The worst-affected district is still the East. On Friday, East Sikkim reported 121 coronavirus infections, accounting for roughly 60% of all coronavirus infections in the state.

Vaccination: 

Similarly, the Covid vaccination centre in Gangtok has been relocated to the Thakurbari temple's hall, and Sikkim University has offered to convert its History block into a vaccination centre. Those who live near the SU block in Tadong will be vaccinated on alternate days beginning Monday.

Sikkim receives medical aid from central government: 

On Friday, Sikkim received 60 oxygen concentrators from the Government of India and 500 vials of Remdesivir from Sun Pharma, which is used in the care of COVID-19 patients.

Dr. Pempa D Bhutia, state health director general, reported that 15 oxygen concentrators have already been distributed to Namchi district hospital and Singtam district hospital, respectively. Primary health centres will receive two oxygen concentrators each, while district hospitals will receive one.

So far State has received 310 oxygen concentrators. The State is also installing a second oxygen plant at STNM hospital which will produce 200 litres of oxygen per minute.

Dr. Pempa said the State will get the plant from the Centre by the end of the month. The Central government has also approved an oxygen plant for Geyzing district hospital.
