Sikkim: STNM Hospital running short on manpower, DoP seeks more hands

With STNM Hospital overwhelmed with 108 new cases yesterday alone in Sikkim, and attending to 326 COVID-19 patients admitted there, it's staff has been stretched thin. With mandatory quarantine required for health workers after duty at the COVID wing, the hospital is running short of manpower and has communicated requirement for additional Medical Attendants and Safai Karamcharis.

The Department of Personnel has accordingly written to heads of departments requesting that all departments nominate one office attendant and one Safai karamchari for deployment at STNM Hospital for non-COVID duty. The names have to be provided with the latest by 24 July, the letter from Secretary, DoP, conveys.

Earlier, Sikkim government has declared a complete lockdown for seven days with effect from July 21st, 2020 to arrest the spread of the COVID-19.

During the lockdown, all government and private offices, shops, business establishments and schools will remain close. The movement of the private vehicles will remain restricted.

On July 16th, 2020, the Sikkim government has made the COVID-19 test compulsory for all the ministers after one of the ministers came in contact with an infected person.

However, the Rural Development Minister Sonam Lama and his team have been tested negative for the COVID-19, health authorities confirmed. They all underwent the Rapid Antigen test on July 14th, 2020.

India recorded the more than 45720 COVID-19 cases and 1129 deaths in the last 24 hours, pushing the total tally to 1238635. The death toll is now 29861, as per data released by the Union Health Ministry. Active cases in India stand at 426167 while 782607 have been cured or discharged so far.

Among the states, Maharashtra is the first state to cross 6 thousand deaths. It has recorded 337607 corona cases with 187769 cured, 12556 deaths, and 137282 active cases. The western state is followed by Delhi and Tamil Nadu. Delhi has corona 126323 cases with 107650 cured, 3719 deaths, and 14954 active cases. Tamil Nadu has 186492 positive cases with 131583 cured, 3144 deaths 51765 active cases. Gujarat with 51399 COVID-19 cases, so far, has 37260 have been cured, 2224 deaths, and 11915 active cases.
