GANGTOK: Bhaichung Tshering Bhutia, a candidate in the Gangtok municipal election, was defeated by the narrowest margin of a single vote in the Sikkim municipal election, results of which was declared on Saturday.

There were a total of 35 postal ballot votes cast, 22 of which were considered legitimate and all in favour of the winning candidate Paljor Bhutia.

The most important aspect of this ward was that the winning candidate Paljor Bhutia beat Bhaichung Tshering Bhutia by a single vote.

On election day, March 31, a total of 710 votes were cast.

The results of the Sikkim municipal election for all 40 seats in four districts have been announced. The votes were counted in a safe setting. Elections were held for 40 of the 51 total seats, with 11 candidates elected unopposed.

The fact that there were similar number of male and female candidates who won the polls this time was an important aspect of the local body election.

After the state legislative assembly added a new Section 14A to the Sikkim Municipality Act, 2007, which prohibits any assistance to candidates from any party, directly or indirectly, a non-party-based election was held for the first time in Sikkim.
