JORHAT: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma today visited Nimatighat in Jorhat to take stock of the situation after two ferries with at least 150 passengers on board from opposite directions collided in the Brahmaputra River.

The horrific accident took place on Wednesday around 4 pm at Nimatighat, Jorhat district of Assam.

As per preliminary reports, as many as 87 persons have survived the boat capsize accident while two are missing and 8 persons are being treated at JMCH.

One person -- a 30-year-old professor -- was tragically killed. The deceased has been identified as Parimita Das (30).

On his visit to the site, CM Sarma said that the ferries which run with single-engine have been suspended from today.

While taking stock of the ferry disaster, the Chief Minister stated that the ferries will now be upgraded to double engines, for which a fund of Rs. 10 lakh will be provided.

He further informed that the government will provide assistance to the family of Parimita Das.

Furthermore, a criminal report has been lodged on the incident.

CM Sarma also announced that work on the Majuli Bridge will begin in November and be completed in four years. The ministers will review the bridge's progress, which has also been discussed with the Centre.

Taking to Twitter CM Sarma wrote, "Visited the boat accident site near Nimati Ghat & took stock of the present situation & rescue operations by

 

">@NDRFHQ & SDRF. Have directed Jorhat Dist Admin to register a criminal case on the accident. A high level inquiry will also be instituted today."

The Chief Minister also visited the Jorhat Medical College & Hospital (JMCH) and met those injured in the boat accident.

He also enquired about their health and urged doctors to ensure the best treatment.
