Slain MLA Tirong Aboh's Widow Chakat Looks to Win Election Amid Beefed Up Security

Security measures have been beefed up in Arunachal Pradesh's Tirap district ahead of the bye-polls in West Khonsa LAC, which has been necessitated after sitting MLA Tirong Aboh was gunned down by suspected NSCN militants earlier this year. Aboh's wife, Chakat, will contest the polls as an independent candidate.

Superintendent of Police, Kardak Riba has informed the media that 12 cos of paramilitary forces, IRBn and state police under the supervision of two SPs, will assist the local police to keep peace and order in the State.

10 DSPs, along with 16 inspectors and 26 sub-inspectors, have also been deployed in the district. The election will be held on October 21.

It may be mentioned here that earlier, five major political parties of Arunachal Pradesh, both ruling and opposition, have unanimously decided to field Chakat Aboh, the wife of NPP leader Tirong Aboh who was shot dead in May, as an independent candidate for the by-poll to Khonsa West Assembly seat.

The CEO's office said that considering the sensitivity of the constituency, all precautionary arrangements have been made to prevent any untoward incident in the lead up to the bye-polls in the State.

The Election Commission of India (ECI) has deployed two observers — Monoranjan Dutta (general observer) and Parneet Singh (expenditure observer) — to oversee the polls.
