ITANAGAR: Arunachal Pradesh legislative assembly speaker Pasang D Sona urged the people of the state especially the youths to preserve and protect their mother languages, which are facing a threat of extinction due to changing situations.

Addressing the ‘International Mother Language Day’ celebrations at the Vivekananda Kendra Vidyalaya (VKV) campus Sona said one's mother tongue is the route map of the culture of an individual as it signifies who they are, where they come from and the direction they are going towards.

While stressing the importance of language preservation, he said, “loss of culture is loss of identity and similarly, loss of language is the greatest loss any society can suffer.”

It's good to learn other languages because it connects people, but you should never forget your own mother tongue, as it is your identity, he added.

The speaker also urged all the parents to ensure their children learn and speak their own language in these changing times.

Furthermore, calling for the documentation of indigenous languages for future generations, he said that until and unless one knows his/her own language or dialect, they won’t be able to follow their culture.

The speaker also encouraged the students to inculcate reading habits and announced to provide funds for the school library.

To encourage understanding of linguistic and cultural diversity and to promote multilingualism, International Mother Language Day is celebrated worldwide on February 21.
