GUWAHATI: Assam Rajya Sabha member Parliament and Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) activist Ajit Kumar Bhuyan said Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal who is also an in-charge of Home Ministry has so far failed to stop the attacks on the Assamese villages by 'miscreants' from neighbouring states.

Bhuyan further said that CM Sonowal himself is morally responsible for failing in stopping this aggression from neighbouring state.

"@sarbanandsonwal, also incharge of Home Ministry, totally failed in stopping the attacks on Assamese villages by miscreant from neighbouring states. CM himself is morally responsible for not being able to stop these aggression from neighbouring state," the MP wrote in a tweet.

These accusations have been levelled against Sonowal after miscreants from the Mizoram side on Tuesday reportedly set as many as 20 houses on fire along the border area of Kosurtol in Hailakandi.

Assam and Mizoram share around 164-km boundary and there has been border territorial dispute between both the states for many years.

Several persons from both sides were injured in violence along the border last year in October after some residents of Vairengte in Kolasib district of Mizoram set on fire temporary huts made by residents of Assam’s Lailapur in Cachar district on a stretch of the disputed land.

While Mizoram claimed the huts were built on ‘no man’s land’ Assam claimed the area as theirs.

Following the incident, the highway going to Mizoram was blocked by the Assam’s residents for several days.

However, after several rounds of talks between the two states the blockade was lifted in November following intervention of the Union home ministry.
