GUWAHATI: As part of a spree of inaugurations ahead of the state assembly polls notification, Assam chief minister Sarbananda Sonowal today inaugurated the under-construction new assembly complex to hold the last day’s proceedings of the budget session, also the last session of the incumbent house.

Sonowal along with Assembly speaker Hitendra Nath Goswami inaugurated the two-storey assembly complex that is part of a 15-storey new secretariat building, the tallest in the Northeast.

The Election Commission of India is likely to notify the state polls any time after mid-February.

Inaugurating the complex along with his cabinet colleagues, Sonowal recalled the sweet and sour memories of the past five years and thanked the members for all the guidance and suggestions.

The new building has four inter-linked buildings and several other advanced facilities. The complex on a 10-acre plot with a floor area of 3,61,000 sq ft, is being constructed at a cost of Rs.235 crore.

Sonowal hoped the BJP-led alliance will sweep the 2021 elections after having “delivered the stated over the past five years”.

“Everybody across the state have benefitted and lived a dignified life under our government. And so nobody needs to worry, we will come back to power,” he said.

The claim came at a time when hundreds of teachers were staging protest outside the assembly demanding their dues.

Highlighting his government’s intolerance against corruption, Sonowal made special mention of the way he dealt with the Assam Police sub inspector recruitment examination question paper leak and said: “I was in Delhi at that time. As soon as I was informed about it, I said stop the examination immediately and that there will be probe into it.”

He also said the government and the law enforcement agencies ensured filing of a chargesheet with 89 days.
