CAPE TOWN: A 37-year-old South African lady claims she gave birth to ten babies (seven boys and three girls) earlier this month, which will almost certainly land her in the Guinness Book of Records for the largest number of infants delivered at once.

The photograph of Gosiame Thamara Sithole, a woman from the Tembisa township in Johannesburg, with an over-expanded tummy, went viral on social media and inspired the phrase "decuplets."

However, the babies have not made an appearance in public, leading to concern that the parents' claim may be false.

Meanwhile, the South African government is still unable to confirm how many kids the 37-year-old actually delivered.

Sithole's announcement comes less than a month after a Malian lady gave birth to nine infants in Morocco, marking the first case of nonuplets.

Sithole gave birth in a Pretoria hospital, according to the Pretoria News citing her husband Teboho Tsotetsi. According to the publication, all of the babies were born prematurely.

"The Suleman octuplets are only the second full set of octuplets to be born alive in the United States and one week after their birth, surpassed the previous worldwide survival rate for a complete set of octuplets set by the Chukwu octuplets in 1998," according to the Guinness World Records website.
