Chennai, July 12, 2019:

The water crisis in Chennai has been making a lot of headlines over the last few days. In fact, things turned have so bad that the Hollywood star Leonardo Dicaprio posted about the 'water crisis' on his social media profiles after a BBC report. Now, a special 50 wagon train carrying water from Tamil Nadu's Vellore district has reached Chennai on Friday afternoon to provide relief to the citizens.

Media platforms have reported that the first train carrying water from Jolarpet railway station in Vellore district to Chennai left for the state capital this morning, and have arrived in the capital city, at the time of filing this report.

Meanwhile, the state of Tamil Nadu is running rain deficient by 44%. Chennai gets its water from four main reservoirs: Puzhal, Cholavaram, Chembarambakkam and Poondi. But much to the dismay of the citizens of the Tamil Nadu capital, reservoirs and groundwater have started to run dry in and around the city.

Many have proposed ideas such as bringing water from other watersheds or investing in desalination plants to provide water to increasingly water-stressed Chennai. Assam' Nagaon MP (belonging to the Congress) party, Pradyut Bordoloi has also suggested something along those lines in the Parliament. The worst thing is all the four major reservoirs that are a major source of drinking water hold zero water level now. Poor rainfall can perhaps be blamed for this tragedy.
