State Government has no Alternative but to Shift Dumping Ground from Deepor Beel: NGT

Guwahati, July 20, 2019:

A three judge’s bench of the National Green Tribunal (NGT) reiterated that the State Government has no alternative but to shift the dumping ground in question from the existing site near 'Deepor Beel' as it falls within the Deepor Beel, during its hearing on July 16.

The bench comprised of Justice S. P. Wangdi- Judicial Member, Justice K. Ramakrishnan- Judicial Member and Dr. Satyawan Singh Garbyal- Expert Member.

In the statement released by the NGT, it was stated, “Although the video conferencing could not be held in this case also as in the other cases, Mr. Nalin Kohli, learned Additional Advocate General for the State of Assam has appeared to inform us of the steps being taken by the State of Assam for shifting the waste dumping site from the Deepor Beel elsewhere and the impediments faced by the State in doing so. He seeks leave to file an affidavit to place these facts on record.”

Granting the leave for filing the affidavit within one week, the bench further added, “We again reiterate that the State Government has no alternative but to shift the dumping ground in question from the existing site as it falls within the Deepor Beel which is a Ramsar site and declared as a wetland under the Central Wetland Rules, 2010 as amended in 2017. It is also emphasized that the site also abuts Eco-Sensitive Zone/Wild Life Sanctuary.”
