GUWAHATI: Following an increase in COVID-19 cases in Assam, the Kamrup (M) district administration has decided to make wearing masks mandatory while stepping into public places for the people of Guwahati.

The district administration is planning to impose fines on those not wearing masks.

Kamrup (M) DC Biswajit Pegu said that at Friday's meeting it was decided that wearing masks will be compulsory in the district.

The authorities will impose a penalty of Rs 500 for the first offence and Rs 1,000 for the second and subsequent offences if people do not wear masks in public, he added.

The fine also applies to those who are found not wearing masks properly.

Last year during the intensity of the pandemic, the Gauhati High Court ordered a crackdown on those who violated COVID-19 safety standards, instructing state police to be "proactive on the streets" and punish those who do not wear masks or maintain social distance.

Meanwhile, one more COVID-19 patient succumbed in Assam, while 19 people in Guwahati railway station and three in Kamakhya temple have tested positive for the virus today.
