GOALPARA: Stripped of his ticket last night to contest the Assam assembly elections, Jaleswar’s All India United Democratic Front (AIUDF) aspirant Rafikul Islam today threatened to commit suicide and accused party chief Badruddin Ajmal of abetting suicide.

Islam was issued AIUDF ticket on March 7 and it was withdrawn last night after the party’s ally Congress nominated Aftab Uddin Mollah from the seat. The AIUDF has nominated Reza Amin in place of Islam.

“After I was given ticket on March 7, I started campaigning taking all party workers with me over the past 10 days. I was supposed to file nomination today. I was at my advocate’s place in Goalpara last night when I was informed that my party candidature was withdrawn. I was left shocked and speechless,” Islam said today.

Accusing Ajmal of changing the candidate in exchange of money, Islam alleged that the party leadership was abetting him to commit suicide out of shame. “They are qualified people. Neither does Maulana Ajmal have any financial need. I can’t believe that he did it for a few bucks. I would not have been so much ashamed had he shot me dead. He is abetting me to commit suicide,” Islam said in press conference with moist eyes at his Jaleswar party office.

Several of his supporters were seen crying inconsolably at the time of press conference.

“I am in such a position that I may commit suicide any time. But, having served the party ever since its inception, my last would be Maulana Ajmal should attend my janeja (burial),” Islam said.
