Guwahati: Following the Jorhat AASU-leader lynching incident leader, Leader of the Opposition at the Assam Legislative Assembly, Debabrata Saikia has stated that a study of the social environment of the state needs to be commissioned to prevent such incidents.

Speaking to the media, Saikia said that it is often noticed that people become outraged over small incidents and action or initiatives need to be taken to prevent such prevailing situations. A study needs to be conducted to know why such incidents were taking place in the state.

“We should not be regretting after an incident occurs but we think, we should first find a way to prevent such incidents”, he added.

The police have arrested 13 persons in connection with the Jorhat AASU-leader lynching case till Tuesday morning.

The prime accused Neeraj Das (alias Kola Lora) has also been arrested.

28-year-old Animesh Bhuyan was attacked by a mob on suspicion that they were responsible for an accident that took place on the road. Bhuyan was attacked by a mob who the locals claim were drug addicts.

The prime accused Das is said to be a known criminal. He is the son of Mohan Das who had alleged that Bhuyan and two others had hit him with their car.

However, the police have claimed that the allegations of Bhuyan being involved in the accident was “prima facie” false.

A magisterial inquiry has been also been ordered.

On the other hand, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma has directed police to file a chargesheet within 15 days and ensure a fast-track trial of the case.

Sankor Jyoti Baruah, AASU General Secretary speaking about the incident said, “At a time when the Abhi-Neel lynching case is yet to end, another person lynched in the middle of the road. We demand strict actions against all those informed as soon as possible.”
