SHILLONG: In view of the rapid increase in number of COVID-19 cases in the city, the East Khasi Hills district administration has clamped Section 144 CrPC prohibiting opening of shops, establishments and markets, as well as roadside stalls on Sundays in Shillong agglomeration, citing the risk of attracting large crowds at a single location.

However, essential services, such as pharmacies and medicine stores, are excluded from this directive.

Opening of makeshift shops and roadside vending draw massive crowds in Shillong on Sundays.

According to district magistrate of East Khasi Hills Isawanda Laloo the order came into effect after inspections revealed that COVID-19 protocols of social distance, hand hygiene and mask wearing were not being followed.

Non-compliance with SOPs would result in legal penalties, according to the order.
