GUWAHATI: Choking back tears, Kaliabor MP Gaurav Gogoi said that his father, Tarun Gogoi, is being made to listen to immortal classics by bard Bhupen Hazarika as he continues to struggle to recover from post COVID complications. Through earphones, the 86-year-old is also being made to listen to speeches by his role models -- Indira and Rajiv Gandhi. The senior Gogoi was put on mechanical ventilator yesterday after suffering from "multiple organ failure."

"Two days ago Zubeen Garg came to enquire about former Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi's health around 12:30 am. He advised that for Gogoi's peace, he must be made to listen to music. Taking Zubeen's advice and after taking permission from the doctors, he is being made to listen to songs, folk songs etc by Bhupen Hazarika. He is also being made to listen to speeches by Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, which inspired him to embark on a political journey," Gaurav told media persons congregated at the Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH).

Health Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma says that the veteran leader is on "complete life support" and his brain and heart are the only organs that seem to be working. The afflicted man's eyes are also flickering, Sarma said.

It needs mention here that Tarun Gogoi tested positive for the coronavirus on August 25, and was admitted to the GMCH the next day. Gogoi was treated for 20 days and finally tested negative. Gogoi’s existing co-morbidities and advanced age had made recovery slow.

He was once again admitted in the same hospital on September 24 following drop in his oxygen level, and was discharged in the last week of October.
