Teachers in Mizoram on warpath, begins stir

Private teachers of government grant-in-aid high schools and middle schools in Mizoram are on a warpath now.

In protest against the Mizoram government’s alleged failure to meet their demands to upgrade 61 schools to ad hoc status within a stipulated time, the teachers are under the banner of Mizoram Government Aided School Association (MIGASA) began a “no teaching day” on Thursday across the State.

Stating that the stir would continue till 17^th August, MIGASA president C Lalngaihzuala explained that the teachers had to resort to strike as the State government had allegedly failed to give any positive response to their demands.

He warned that if the government failed to meet their demand, the teachers would enforce closure of 61 schools across the State.

He admitted that the stir would affect over 3,000 school students and expressed regret over the same.

According to Lalngaihzuala, the government failed to upgrade existing lumpsum grant-in aided schools though it had upgraded many private schools to lumpsum grant-in aid status.

He said the schools were running with a lumpsum grant of Rs 1.2 lakh annually for more than 10 years now.

He accused the ruling Congress dispensation of having failed to upgrade any school during the last 10 years of its rule.
