Guwahati, January 14, 2019:

The most awaited Bhogali Bihu (Magh Bihu) has knocked the doors of every “Axomiya” in the state of Assam as people of this State gear up to celebrate the preceding night of Bihu, i.e. Uruka, the night of feasts and merrymaking.

The pre-Bhogali festivities find their best of the expressions in the markets as people look for the best of food materials, especially fish, meat, milk, curd, cream, chira, the pithas, the laddoos etc.

The city too is in the grip of Bhogali spirit with all markets witnessing a huge rush today. In the city even the skyrocketing prices of fish, meat etc. have failed to act as a hindrance to the people’s enthusiasm who hit the markets in large numbers.

But beyond the city landscape, bhelaghars (mejis) of various sizes and shapes – many inspired from historical structures and monuments and some depicting important events – can still be seen, though it is somewhat rare in the urban areas of the state.

The Bhelaghar, which is a makeshift shelter made of straw, bamboo and leaves where Bihu revelers spend the uruka night and enjoy a get-together feast before setting it on flames next morning – is also a structure of belief and hopes.

Amid what Assam has been toiling under in the past few months, its time for the Asomiya spirit to rise from the ashes again and stand united – in arms and in feasts.

We from InsideNE wish all its readers a VERY HAPPY MAGH BIHU. Happy feasting!!
