Tinsukia, August 21, 2019:

The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has picked up two persons, including one from Assam's Tinsukia district, in connection with the assassination of Khonsa MLA Tirong Aboh, who was shot dead (allegedly by NSCN (IM) militants.

Tinsukia businessman Jaikishan Sharma, as well as a former classmate and close aide of Aboh, have been picked up for interrogation. Both of them were picked up by the NIA from Dimapur in Nagaland.

It is being suspected that the two had leaked the whereabouts of Aboh to militants who shot him dead.

Unknown gunmen ambushed and killed Aboh, who was a sitting NPP MLA, and ten others, including two security personnel, when they were returning home to Tinsukia. They were shot dead at around 11:30 am on May 21 in a militant attack near Bogapani village at Tirap district in Arunachal Pradesh. He was heading to Khonsa from Dibrugarh district in Assam when he was cornered by militants who had opened fire.

The Aboh-killing was one of many incidents of poll-related violence in frontier state Arunachal Pradesh, where many similar incidents had been reported before, during, and after the Lok Sabha and Assembly elections in the State, which were held simultaneously.

The election was held in the two Constituencies of Arunachal — Arunachal East and West — during first phase of elections on April 11. The result of Assembly Elections will be announced on May 23.
