AGARTALA: Tripura Royal Pradyot Manikya, an advocate for the settlement of Bru refugees in Tripura and one of the key figures in the signing of the pact, today demanded justice for a fireman who was reportedly killed during the scuffle that broke out between agitators and authorities. Pradyot-led The Indigenous Progressive Regional Alliance (or TIPRA) has also been demanding an early settlement to the decades-old issue.

Pradyot earlier today took to Facebook to demand justice for the slain man. He also announced that his own organization would Rs. 50,000 as compensation to the family of the deceased firefighter, identified as Biswajit Debbarma.

"Those leaders who broke the law and killed an innocent fireman will have to pay the price," Pradyot wrote in his post. "TIPRA DEMANDS criminal action and arrest against these people and organisations who despite repeated requests broke the law. TIPRA has also decided to give Rs 50,000 in support of the family of Biswajit Debbarma as a sign of solidarity in their moment of grief, Biswajit was doing his duty when he was brutally murdered and we all know who are the people behind this. I appeal for all to maintain peace and demand the Govt to arrest these persons involved," he added.

It needs mention here that the Fire Service personnel, who was injured during the protests against the settlement of roughly 30,000 Brus at North Tripura’s Panisagar yesterday, passed away today, raising the toll to two. Yesterday, Srikanta Das, a 40-year-old carpenter, passed away after police fired bullets even as the protests became violent.

The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the incident and announced Rs. 5 lakh compensation for the deceased’s family.

An indefinite shutdown has been called in North Tripura against the state government’s formula to resettle Bru migrants from Mizoram.
