TISS students’ protest comes to an end

Guwahati, January 31, 2019:

After 15 days of protest and 70 hours of hunger strike, the protesting student of Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Guwahati (TISS) has decided to call off the protest as the administration conceded to the charter of demand.

The protest which was a continuation of the last protest that took place in the campus demanding that the institute continues waive off fees for the GOI PMS Students (ST, SC, and OBC whose parents income is below 2.5lakh).

After 10 months of unrest and insecurity among the GOI-PMS students of their career in the institution; considering the only mechanism that was offered to these sections of students was a limited provision of student’s aid.

After series of dialogue between the protesting students and the administration in the campus, they finally came to an agreement that minimal hostel will be charged and the remaining fees will be supplement by the student's aid and funds the administration receive from a various source.

Hence the students called off the protest and agreed to resume their classes, extends their promise to help and continue working to ensure these students from the backward categories by mobilizing funds to support these students.

Moreover, the institution agrees to reduce the burden for the students and a panel will be formed who will conduct interviews and a lot the aid on students need basis and special provision is made for most needy of the needy.

The students as well as the institute signed a letter of agreement and forwarded it to the Director of TISS. The students finally conceded from inciting another unrest feeling assured after the Administration along with the faculties continues to extend their solidarity by coming up with mechanisms to support these students, that ensures the continuation of GOI PMS system in a more sustainable mechanism without causing further deficits because of the support the Institute grants this section of students.
