Tokyo Olympic silver medalist Mirabai Chanu recieves hero's welcome on her return to India

NEW DELHI: Saikhom Mirabai Chanu, India's first Olympic medalist, and her coach Vijay Sharma returned to India yesterday evening.

They were greeted and felicitated by the Union Sports Ministers --Anurag Singh Thakur, Kiren Rijiju, Kishan Reddy, Sarbananda Sonowal, and Nisith Pramanik.

Anurag Singh Thakur said, "Mirabai Chanu's victory symbolises the victory of 130 crore Indians, who were filled with pride when India's flag was raised and the national anthem was played at the medal ceremony in Tokyo."

Sarbananda Sonowal congratulated Mirabai on her achievement, saying, "You have inspired the nation, and we are all proud of you."

Kiren Rijiju stated that she promised to bring a medal for the country before leaving for Tokyo when we spoke, and she has kept her word.

Kishan Reddy said, "Mirabai has captured the hearts of all Indians. Her journey to success serves as an inspiration not only for the sports community but for any young person with dreams and goals.

Mirabai Chanu, who won silver medal in women's 49 kg weightlifting on July 24.

Overjoyed Chanu said, "This is a dream come true for me."

She said she has been preparing for this moment for years, and that she is glad it all came together for her on the biggest stage of all, the Olympic Games.

Chanu also expressed gratitude to the government for its timely support over the years, particularly the two trips to the United States last year and this year.

" I would also like to mention that the 'Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS)' has boosted my career and medal chances," she added.
