SHILLONG: After reports of vandalism in parts of the East Khasi Hills, Meghalaya's government has declared a total curfew in many parts of state capital Shillong from 8 PM today. The curfew will be in effect from 5 AM of August 17.

Earlier today, the government had ordered the suspension of mobile internet services in the four districts of East Khasi Hills, West Khasi Hills, South West Khasi Hills, and Ri-Bhoi for 48 hours.

I Isawanda Laloo, District Magistrate of East Khasi Hills District said that this decision has been taken as "there have been incidents of stone-pelting, arson and theft, and a serious breakdown of law & order in parts of Shillong" and "there is every likelihood of further breach of peace which may lead to incidents causing loss of life and property."

The total curfew shall be clamped in the Municipal Area, the Cantonment area, all areas under Mawlai block including census towns, areas under Mawpat block including census towns, areas under Mylliem Block from Umshyrpi Bridge up to Mile. Upper Shillong, Madanrting, Mawblei, Laitkor, Nongksch, Umlyngka, Lawsohtun, Mawdiangdiang, Dicngiong, and Siejiong.

The notification said that any public movement, offices, shops and establishments, and all educational institutions will remain closed and no gathering, public meeting or rally may be held during the total curfew period. However, exemptions shall be made for medical emergencies, Covid-19, and hospital duty during the total curfew.

Meanwhile, the Assam's police have urged the state's citizens to refrain from visiting Shillong in view of the deteriorating law and order condition.

Shillong Sunday witnessed stone-pelting by miscreants driving around in snatched police vehicles brandishing weapons in broad daylight.

According to eyewitnesses, around 1-1:30 pm, a group of unidentified miscreants attacked a police vehicle (black SUV) belonging to the Mawkynroh Police Outpost ML05-F-3013 near Mawlai bypass.

Attacked by stones from all sides, the police got down and managed to escape the attack, however, a few of the attackers took the vehicle along with the arms and drove away.

The vandalized vehicle was driven to Jaiaw with the miscreants brandishing weapons and shouting slogans. It was set ablaze in Jaiaw.

The gate of the outpost was also vandalized.

Meanwhile, stones were also pelted at vehicles plying on the Guwahati-Shillong highway damaging them severely.
