Dimapur, Sep 11: The Dimapur Chamber of Commerce and Industries (DCCI) will impose total shutdown of all shops and business establishments in Dimapur town on September 16.  The day-long shutdown has been called as the first phase of the DCCI’s agitation to protest against the inaction of the Nagaland government and its machineries against multiple and rampant illegal taxation on the business community by various groups as well government agencies, DCCI president Akashe Zhimomi said on Saturday.

To protest against various taxes/fees collected by the Dimapur Municipal Council on GST items at check gates, entry of goods transport into Dimapur will also be restricted during the one-day shutdown, he said.

Zhimomi said the call for the day-long total business shutdown was taken as per its recent statement published in the local media. The DCCI, in its statement, highlighted the plight of the business community owing to multiple and rampant illegal taxation by various groups and government agencies.

He said the State Government has so far not taken any concrete steps nor gave any assurance to curb the menace.

He said the DCCI will be compelled to resort to further and extreme course of action if the government of the day fails to address the plight of the business community.

The DCCI appealed to the Confederation of Nagaland Chamber of Commerce and Industries (CNCCI),  the apex traders body of Nagaland, and all its district units to lend support and show solidarity to the common issue.

It also requested the public to raise their voice and extend cooperation as the issue of illegal and multiple taxations affects each and every citizen of the State.

On Thursday, the CNCCI threatened indefinite voluntary closure of all business activities across Nagaland if the State government failed to address the issue of multiple taxations. It also warned to take recourse to legal remedies over the issue.

Multiple taxation by various Naga political groups besides the taxes imposed by government agencies, including municipal and town councils, have burdened the business community and made it difficult for them to engage in any meaningful business activities, it stated.

The CNCCI said though the issue was flagged on several occasions, the government seemed to be in no mood to address it with seriousness.
